Taiwanese are very sensitive in politics, because we have the two biggest parties in Taiwan. And some people might be fight about which party they want to support. To avoid this situation we do not talk about politics in public place. Second, we have a complex situation between our country and Main China. Usually when our president says that Taiwan want to be independent, our stock price will fall in next day. The businesspeople hate it, so they don’t talk about politics. Third some people even do not talk politics with their family and closed friends. They know that no matter how closed family and friends they are, when they got drunk, they might kill you just because you have different politics view. That’s why we don’t talk about politics with family, friends even in business.
Rule two, punctuality is important in business. In our culture, people think it’s polite to go to meetings on time. Therefore they might leave home early and arrive the meeting room fifteen minutes before the meeting start. Many people follow the rules for example like I would set up my watch faster fifteen minutes, so I can arrive the classroom early. It does work. I am seldom late to my date. Second, if you are on time, people can feel you have active attitude to do the business. They might trust you therefore you might get some chance to succeed. We not only talk about going to the meetings on time but also about finishing your work on time. Third. In Taiwan, there is a slogan in one of the biggest enterprise is Time is money, be on time in your work. If you are not on time, you may get a lower salary. Therefore the second rule that you must follow is punctuality.
The last rule you have to know is greetings. It’s very important in business. Every country has their own greetings in business. For example in our country when we meet our boss or a person who has a higher position than ours, we use their status to call them like: manager president and chairman. It’s the way to show our respect to them. And if you are doing business, you have to shake hands with the other person. It means nice to meet you or hello. You can’t ignore that you do not see them. It’s the most impolite action and everyone should not do it. Third, it’s also not polite if you use the wrong greetings like kissing holding in our country. You can find some information before you do business in Taiwan to make sure you do not make mistakes. Finally, remember that greetings are important so do not use wrong greetings.
